WHAT YOU CAN DO

ASK AARP TO MAKE PASSAGE OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY FAIRNESS ACT (H.R. 147/S.619) ONE OF THEIR PRIORITY ISSUES.  This bill would completely repeal the GPO/WEP!   The Social Security Fairness Act has been in committee for several years!  The solution is there, but it hasn’t gone anywhere!

Once a year, AARP meets to decide what issues they will officially adopt and work on.  An issue becomes an official issue based on how many letters, phone calls and faxes the organization receives.  This is a real “Catch 22″ because it is still the case that most people don’t find out about the reduction in their benefits until they retire!  The purpose of this blog is to let people know about the GPO/WEP and what they can do — BEFORE they retire!

Please write a letter and do four things:  (1)  Ask AARP to make passage of the Social Security Fairness Act a priority issue; (2)  Tell your story or the story of someone you know (with their permission); (3)  Send a copy of your letter to the National Education Association (NEA) at www.clewis.nea.org  and; (4) send a copy of your letter to our Congress at www.nea.org/lac/socsec/offsets or mail a printed copy.

PRIVACY/SECURITY:   When you enter your story on this blog, it will be seen by many people!  We suggest you use your initials and your state as a signature.  When you send your letters to AARP, NEA and the Congress, you will need to include your full name, address, etc.  If your time is limited, the most important letter you can send is the one to AARP, so please try to find the time for that one.  Thank you so much!

I retired as an educator in Kentucky in 1997. Prior to retirement I had worked at second jobs and paid in social security. Since my retirement I have worked fulltime paying in social security. The summer of 2007, I will be 62 and would like to retire from my present job for potential health reasons but I know that all reductions will make it virtually impossible. Why have I had to pay in Social Security if I cannot draw from the fund. Please continue to work to repeal the offset.

HI JS!!! DID YOU SEND YOUR LETTER TO AARP? THE NEW CONGRESS HAS RE-INTRODUCED THE SOCIAL SECURITY FAIRNESS ACT WHICH WILL COMPLETELY REPEAL THE GPO/WEP. PLEASE MAKE AN ALL-OUT EFFORT TO CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO URGE THE PASSAGE OF THIS ACT. I THINK IT CAN BE DONE, BUT WE ARE GOING TO NEED SOME REPUBLICANS TO HELP OUT. MITCH MCCONNELL HAS NEVER SUPPORT THE REPEAL OF THE GPO/WEP – AT LEAST HE HAS NEVER SIGNED UP AS A SUPPORTER. EVERYONE ELSE IN KY HAS. MCCONNELL’S LATEST RESPONSE IS ‘IT’S NOT EVEN ON THE RADAR SCREEN.” I THINK HE MEANS “HIS” RADAR SCREEN!! PLEASE – DO WHAT YOU CAN … THANKS … LK
